What are moon boots used for?

Cam Walker Boots or Moon Boots are used by Podiatrists and other health professionals as a tool to limit a person’s movement and loading of the foot and ankle. ‘CAM’ stands for ‘Controlled Ankle Movement’ and will aid rest and healing of an injury.

Common conditions that require a Cam Walker include;

  • Stress reactions or fractures of the feet e.g. Metatarsal fracture
  • Non-displaced fractures
  • Tendon ruptures
  • Plantar Fascia Tear
  • Achilles tear
  • Ankle sprains
  • Post surgery recovery
  • Diabetic wounds

Can I walk in a moon boot?

A Cam Walker offloads the foot by providing a full rocker sole that allows for a rocking motion of the foot, with the ankle being in a fixed position. This disperses pressure throughout the foot evenly and reduces movement. The walker allows the person to remain active and mobile without needing crutches or to not weight bear during healing.

A Cam walker provides complete immobilization with the option of removal during sleep and showering as well as adjustments when swelling is reduced.

Often a person will need to be fitted into a Cam Walker the day of injury or as soon as possible.

At The Foot Centre group all of our podiatrists are qualified to fit Cam Walkers and moon boots and have a range of sizes (Adults and Children’s size) always in stock, allowing for same day fittings. Once fitted, we will guide you through the healing process and ensure the cause of the injury is addressed.

Moon boots aim to provide stability whilst you are walking due to large surface area, please be mindful that there may be a height difference between your limbs when using the CAM walker. If you notice any knee, hip or lower back pain please mention this to your friendly podiatrist.

Can you sleep with a moon boot on?

You can take the CAM walker or moon boot off when you are sleeping! This is a positive for a lot of people for breathability during the night and less heat or itchiness to cause irritation in comparison to a plaster cast.

A CAM walker provides complete immobilization with the option of removal during sleep and showering as well as adjustments when swelling is reduced.

If you get up during the night however, please ensure the boot is next to your bed and leg for easy access when going to the bathroom, getting a drink or just waking up! Every step without your boot causes delayed healing.

If you are able to sleep quite still this will work for you. If you are a restlessly sleeper you may like to sleep in the moon boot for support and prevent delays in healing.

How long do you wear a moon boot for?

Depending on the injury you have and why you have been prescribed a moon boot will determine how long you need to be in a CAM walker for. Generally speaking for a fracture 4-6 weeks in a boot is necessary. Often coming out of a boot will be determined by imaging and the progress of your bones.

A tendon or surgical recovery may take longer as they heal differently to bones. Rehabilitation will often be prescribed for when you may come out of the boot in the form of gradual loading, strengthening and conditioning.

By isolating the structures to heal, you may get muscle weakness due to the lack of movement and therefore essential to follow a strict rehabilitation program and prevent re-injury such as fractures and sprains.

Often a person will need to be fitted into a Cam Walker the day of injury or as soon as possible. Injuries should not have delayed treatment, pain lets the brain know that sometimes is not right, an appointment should be made to seek help ASAP.

Injuries of the foot and ankle need to be managed carefully as to prevent ongoing tendon, ligament and bone complications and set backs.

It is important to note that it is not recommended you drive wearing a moon boot due to the thickness of the boot and closeness of the accelerator and brake. It is likely that your car insurance will not cover you if an accident occurs whilst wearing a boot. This will be discussed further at your consult.

Fitting a moon boot

The fit of a CAM walker is essential. Your foot must be placed back in the heel and firm against the sole as this is where most the control of the device comes from.

Your podiatrist will educate you on the order that the straps need to be completed.

You may also be issued a CAM boot with an air pump which is a great feature when swelling goes up and down, the CAM boot can accommodate your healing journey by adjusting with you ensuring the fit is not too tight or too loose. The straps should be as firm as possible without causing numbness or pins or needles.

Talk to your podiatrist if there are any areas of rubbing, redness or blistering whilst wearing your CAM boot as we can easily adjust the boot or air to make you as comfortable as possible., we are here to help.
